The 2022 Syrah Shake Ridge Ranch is the last vintage to be aged in wood and shows plenty of earthy character and density from the year’s heat, while remaining fresh in acidity. Medium-bodied, sultry layers of lavender, black licorice, and charcuterie ride along its rounded midpalate of lovely mouthfeel, with a sappy, piney quality to the texture. Dark black fruit, a hint of olive, jolts of white pepper, and meaty garrigue are seasoned in hints of pepper and sarsaparilla – not sweet like root beer, but close to its rooty, spicy quality. Drink now through 2037.
