Only 1000 bottles were made of the 2018 Figli Luigi Oddero Barolo Specola. The vineyard has vines more than 60 years old and the soil is a mix of clay, limestone and sand. There are intense ripe strawberry aromas on the nose with open floral notes of violets and freesias. As the wine matures it often develops a distinctive iodine or seaweed note. It has a wonderful, seamless, melting texture with integrated refined tannins. It has a good first impression and mid-palate with fine, salty, lingering tannins. It is an energetic and vibrant wine!

Violet, forest berry, cedar and spice aromas come to the forefront on this perfumed red. Agile and delicious, the lithe, full-bodied palate brings home succulent red cherry, raspberry compote and baking spice while taut, smooth tannins give it a silky texture. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced. Already accessible, it will also age well for several years or longer. Drink through 2030. — Kerin O’Keefe
