Domaine du Cellier aux Moines is setting a new benchmark for the wines from Givry. Their 2022 from the famed Clos du Cellier aux Moines, arguably Givry’s top Premier Cru vineyard, is just one example of how they are redefining the appellation. Red cherry notes, often associated with the red wines of Givry, are present, but do not take center stage. Instead, a complex array of minerals, a dollop of black fruit, and the all-too-elusive “not just fruit” character dance on the palate. Each sip reveals more nuances. Depth of flavor and a velvety texture add another dimension. The stature of this wine comes from a combination of the devotion of the winemaking team (who are driven to make great wine) and the source of the grapes, which are the results of their decade-long project of replacing poor Pinot Noir clones with a better suited massale selection. They have taken Givry to a different level. You may pause at the price for a wine from Givry, but this is no ordinary Givry

If every red from Givry tasted like this, the appellation would be world famous. Deep nose of forest berries with notes of allspice and licorice. Very cool, with a fantastic herbal freshness on the quite compact and concentrated, medium-bodied palate. What a great structure of fine tannins this has, and they drive the very long and chalky finish. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.
