A co-fermented blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Mourvèdre, matured in demi-muids (about 10% of the volume is in amphorae this year), the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve is a strong candidate for perfection. Sourced from the lieux-dits of Guigasse and Pignan, the nose delivers the essence of sandy-soil Grenache, with notes of rose petals, lavender, thyme, cherries and raspberries. Full-bodied and lush, silky and long, it adds hints of toasty oak and salted licorice on the finish. 98-100
Smoke. spices, cherries and flowers on the nose are only part of the show. It is the ripe, lush, supple-textured, sensuous, elegant red berries on the palate that own the day with their length, purity and freshness. The wine is produced from a blend of 55% Grenache and 45% Mourvedre
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Reserve is the usual co-fermented blend of 60% Grenache and 40% Mourvèdre that’s still aging mostly in demi-muids, with a small amount in amphora. It’s another incredibly elegant yet ripe, concentrated 2020 that has the vintage’s purity and freshness front and center. Lots of black raspberry and cassis fruit as well as pepper, flowers, and Provençal herbs define the bouquet, and it has polished tannins that emerge on the palate. I’d put it up with the crème de la crème of the vintage.95-97
A dark, rich and densely layered red, with iron and graphite at its heart, this is smoldering with plum puree, tar and smoke. Surprisingly supple on the integrated palate, with concentration and savory power that will carry this for years. Grenache and Mourvèdre. Drink now.
