Offering intensity and concentration, the drop-dead gorgeous 2019 Vigna San Giuseppe Riserva, part of the Dynamic Duo of Cavallotto’s extraordinary 2019 Riservas, is intensely fragrant, featuring pronounced aromas of violet, baking spice, new leather and baked plum. Offering depth and layers of flavors, the delicious, structured palate delivers layers of ripe Marasca cherry, cinnamon, nutmeg and crushed mint before closing on a note of Earl Grey tea. A network of firm but velvety tannins provides support while bright acidity keeps it energized and balanced. This is one for the long haul.
Beginning to hit its stride, this red is elegant, with a finely wrought structure of acidity and tannins underneath. Plum, cherry, licorice, tar, iron and eucalyptus flavors abound, and this is corralled on the long aftertaste by vibrant acidity. Shows plenty of detail. Best from 2027 through 2047. From Italy.
The organic Cavallotto 2019 Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis Vigna San Giuseppe shows thick texture and density with dark fruits, plum and blackberry layered with extra depth. This wine makes a big impact on the palate and wraps lavishly over the senses. This is one of the most opulent and full-bodied editions I have yet tasted. The fruit is sourced from a 2.38-hectare site with 60-year-old vines with southwest exposures at 310 and 340 meters in elevation. The wine sees 60 months of careful maturation in 20-hectoliter and 100-hectoliter Slavonian botti. In a curious sequence of numbers, production is 8,888 bottles, 666 magnums and 111 three-liter bottle formats.
