Falstaff
Intensely sparkling ruby color with a slightly brightening rim. Very finely drawn nose, opening with notes of dried Mediterranean herbs, followed by plenty of fresh cherry, some blood orange, and tobacco. On the palate it unfolds like a true peacock’s tail, fully coating the mouth with juicy, vibrant fruit. It then develops in many layers with finely woven tannins and an exceptionally long finish.
From vines planted in 1965, the 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Del Suolo displays a youthful red color and is seductive, revealing woven, layered notes of fresh leather, preserved cherries, blood orange, lavender, and dried Mediterranean herbs and flowers. Medium to full-bodied, it captures a vibrant spine of acidity, well-defined tannins, snappy salinity, and mineral underpinnings. It benefits from some air on opening, and I anticipate it will improve quite a bit over the next 6-12 months. It’s nervous and tense in structure and built to last. Drink 2026-2050.
Almost Burgundy-like, with strawberry, cherry and sandalwood aromas. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins yet a firm and crunchy finish. Holding on tight now. Better after 2028.
