In the rarefied world of champagne, Regis Camus garners genuine admiration and awe.
Honored an astounding 8 times as Sparkling Winemaker of the Year by the International Wine Challenge, Régis joined Piper in 1994 and ascended to the prestigious position of cellar master in 2002. Many were stunned when Régis announced his retirement from Piper-Heidsieck in 2018 but don't count him out; he's embarked on an exciting new chapter as cellar master for the House's exclusive line of Rare Champagne Produced only in the most exceptional vintages, only nine vintages of Rare have been created in the last four decades.
Piper-Heidsieck - Cuvée Rare Brut Champagne 2006 Régis sums up each vintage at this tasting with a single word or phrase. In 2006, ‘sunny’ is the word, reflecting both the warm and sometime humid summer conditions, and also the style of the wine: bold and generous. It has a golden hue and seductive aromas of nutmeg, quince and tropical fruit such as mango and kiwi. He describes it as a vintage ‘gorged with the sun’, going on to outline the ‘ping-pong’ match of the palate which glides effortlessly between generosity of texture and freshness. Opulence abounds.
Piper-Heidsieck - Brut Champagne NV
The new release of Piper-Heidsieck non-vintage Brut is simply the finest I have tasted from the house in many years and firmly shows that Regis Camus has now brought Piper up to the same exalted level of quality of its stable-mate, Charles Heidsieck.
The superb nose jumps from the glass in a vibrant blend of apple, tart orange, a lovely and complex base of soil tones, warm bread and a gentle topnote of smokiness. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and complex, with lovely precision, excellent mid-palate concentration, very elegant mousse, and superb balance and grip on the very long and crystal clear finish.
This is rocking and has to be one of the best values in non-vintage Brut out there in the market today- |
